My Mom wrote this poem about giving up someone you love. In her own case it was a horse she adored and it broke her heart, but she came to see the wisdom of her choice. I hope these words bring some measure of comfort to those of you who wonder why YOU were given up. I read this again this morning and I thought of my Mom...and I thought how this might mean something to my partner, Chris.
By Mom...you are loved and missed.
Love-Shawn
Because Love Is Not Enough
Please forgive me for having to give you up-
The short time you were mine, more than filled my cup.
I hope in your own way, you can understand why-
'Cause every time I see you, I almost start to cry.
Love doesn't feed you or put a roof over your head-
So I chose the only way I could, and gave you up instead.
Because love is not enough.
I had to let you go so you would always have the best-
I'd say it more than put my love to the test.
Now, when I see you, so beautiful, healthy, and strong-
I know what I did, painful as it was, was not wrong.
Though my heart is aching, I'm fortunate in many ways-
Knowing you belong to such nice people, gets me through the days.
Because love is not enough.
I know your memories of me no longer exist, and never will-
But the memories of our time together, linger with me still.
You filled a special place in my heart that many never know-
Though you are no longer with me, my love continues to grow.
Now, when I see you running with such grace and precision-
My pride-filled heart knows I made the right decision.
Because love is not enough.
