Father and Son

I heard this song years ago (by Cat Stevens aka: Yousef Islam), called "Father and Son". I loved it's message, and it is as powerful now, as it was when it first came out. I used to sing it at gigs when our band played out and I loved singing it to my son when he was a little boy.
Much water has passed under the bridge and I am an older man now. I thought this message was an important one for Chris to hear. He has recently come out and is dealing with hostility at home from his Mom.
The song starts with a "father" imparting his personal beliefs to his son, then later in the song, the "son" basically answers that he is going to live life his own way.
My personal favorite part of the song is when the son sings "From the moment I could talk, I was ordered to listen now there's a way and I know that I have to go away". So true.
Parents...impart your pearls of wisdom, but remember that to be a good parent, you must listen to your child and let them find their way sometimes. I think back to my own son's childhood, and reflect on how he and his sister have grown up. Now I see Chris struggling with parents who keep drumming THEIR beliefs into his head and I think this song means more to me now than ever. Enjoy...and remember everyone...you have one mouth and two ears, so listening is TWICE as important as talking. ;)
